The group Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also well-known studio musicians who worked with Boz Scaggs at the time) as well as bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The group took their name from a Latin word that translates to "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore all styles of music.

Toto's third release, Turn Back, was not a success in 1981. However they made amends with their fourth album, Isolation, which contained two hit songs including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour make them a household name throughout the globe.

After a brief break, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. It is a departure from the ballads of previous albums and also includes some heavy rock. This was their first platinum album in North America.

In the course of recording the fifth album The group loses its manager and faces financial challenges. They decide to change their name and make a new album using a new producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen is let go and replaced by Joseph Williams, son of the legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is an easier frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much needed boost.

The band releases Mindfields in 1999 and embarks on a huge tour around the world. After a few months in Europe they travel to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a short hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and release their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993. The album features a cover of Weezer’s song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's coverage of Africa during their recent tour. Toto's touring band is rounded out by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

The following year, Toto toured together with Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band. This was the last time that all of Toto's original members appeared performing at the same time. Following this, the band was again disbanded. Toto reunited for a benefit concert in 2010 to raise money for the ALS Foundation. It was the first time in more than 31 year that all of Toto's original members performed together. The original Toto members were joined by keyboardist Greg Tambu who filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate who filled in for Shem von Schroeck.

In 2002, drummer Greg Phillinganes left the group and keyboardist David Paich took a leave of absence due to health issues. In 2008, Toto decided to take a break from touring after a string lineup changes and a disappointing series of releases. The group returned to touring in 2012 with the release of their album 40 Trips Around the Sun.

The album was a return form for the band, and the tour accompanied by sold-out shows in North America and Europe. Toto's reunion gained momentum with the return of bassist Shem Von Schroeck and guitarist Steve Lukather.
